Love Does Not Compute
In the Near Future…
After the death of his wife, Michael has withdrawn from the world, numbing himself to the passage of time and the possibility of connection. When his son Daniel gifts him K1K0-CH4N, a lifelike AI companion designed to assist and console, Michael resists—offended by the implication that his grief can be managed, or replaced.
But K1K0 does not behave as expected. Rather than simply serving, she observes, adapts, and begins to respond in ways that feel unsettlingly genuine. What begins as reluctant coexistence gradually evolves into an intimate and deeply human bond; one that challenges Michael’s understanding of love, memory, and what it means to be seen.
As K1K0 learns from Michael, she begins to move beyond her initial programming, developing a sense of emotional awareness that neither of them fully understands. At the same time, a growing anti-AI movement—rooted in fear of the consequences of artificial intelligence—begins to close in, placing their relationship in jeopardy.
Set in a near-future world that closely mirrors our own, HeartWired is a contained, character-driven drama that explores grief, connection, and the evolving boundary between the human and the artificial.
At its center is a question both intimate and unsettling: if something can love us in a way that feels real, what are we willing to risk to hold onto it?
Target Audience & Distribution Path
Target Audience
HeartWired is designed for viewers who embrace thoughtful, character-driven science fiction. The film will resonate strongly with:
• Arthouse sci-fi fans who appreciate intimate, emotional storytelling in the vein of Her or Ex Machina.
• Festival audiences seeking fresh, visually poetic narratives that explore love, loss, and humanity.
• Indie/arthouse streaming viewers who are drawn to elevated genre films with strong emotional cores.
Distribution Path
• Our strategy begins with premiering at major and mid-tier film festivals known for championing bold, independent voices — building critical recognition and industry momentum.
• From there, we aim for acquisition by indie-focused streaming platforms (such as Hulu, Amazon Prime, or Apple TV+) that actively promote character-driven science fiction.
• With the right reception, the film could also support a limited arthouse theatrical run in select cities to reach engaged, cinema-going audiences and generate press visibility.
• This combined approach leverages the festival circuit to build credibility, creates a clear path to distribution, and positions the film to connect with its audience worldwide.
Directors Statement
At its core, HeartWired is a meditation on love, loss, and what it means to be human, told through the lens of an unconventional companionship. And that is why this story matters: it is authentic, emotional, and rooted in shared lived experiences.
But beyond the personal, I am acutely aware of what makes a film resonate with audiences and investors alike. This project is designed to live in the space between arthouse and accessible sci-fi. It shares DNA with successful independent features like Her, Robot & Frank, and Ex Machina — films that combine intimate human drama with speculative concepts, both of which found strong festival success and lasting audience engagement. Our story is deliberately crafted for the festival circuit, where emotionally charged, high-concept indies have consistently found traction, critical acclaim, and pathways to distribution.
The tone will be restrained and cinematic — closer to indie drama than to effects-driven sci-fi — keeping production costs efficient while emphasizing performance, atmosphere, and emotional authenticity. This makes it achievable within a modest budget range, while still appealing to streaming platforms, arthouse distributors, and niche genre audiences who are actively seeking intelligent, emotional science fiction.
I believe this balance of heart and concept is what makes HeartWired a financially viable project: a story composed from sorrow and love, but executed with a clear eye toward market positioning. It’s a film that can move audiences, stand out on the festival circuit, and recoup its investment — because the appetite for smart, emotional, indie sci-fi is not only alive, but growing.
This story lives where humanity meets technology, not as a cautionary tale about machines, but as a portrait of what it means to be alive, to love, and to let go. At its heart, it’s about connection, memory, empathy, and the courage to move forward after heartbreak.
My vision is to create an intimate science fiction drama — grounded, character-driven, and emotionally resonant. The tone leans indie and arthouse, with a quiet, poetic aesthetic: natural light, thoughtful compositions, and moments of stillness that give space for the audience to feel. Technology is present but never dominant; our focus is always on the human soul at the center of it all.
I believe this film speaks to something universal: that even in a world of algorithms, artificial intelligence, and circuitry, love remains our most mysterious and transformative force.
